In 1998 Ministry of Labor announced that the doctors in Taiwan were excluded from the protection of Labor Standards Act However it was often reported that doctors died from overwork or suffered from industrial accidents due to their considerably long working hours Take three famous events as examples First Po-Chiang Tsai a former surgeon resident of Surgery Department at Chimei Hospital in Yongkang Tainan fainted because of Acute Myocardial Infarction in an operating room hallway Second Yan-Ting Lin a former Intern at NCKU hospital died suddenly in his dormitory room Last but not least Hao-Cheng Chang a former surgeon resident at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital was struck by a severe pain in his head and then vomited while he was on duty The inapplicability of the Labor Standards Act not only infringes the labor rights of doctors but also detracts the long-term medical quality of all citizens
