Various kinds of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are present in industrial wastewater which may show disrupting activities for androgen receptor (AR) thyroid hormone receptor (TR) or estrogen receptor (ER) To investigate the endocrine disrupting activities and to identify potential EDCs in Taiwanese industrial wastewater samples were collected from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of three different industrial parks in Taiwan and were analyzed using recombinant yeast bioassays for endocrine disrupting activities EDCs were further characterized by non-target analysis using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) The results revealed that AR antagonist activity TR disrupting activity and ER antagonist activity were detected in industrial wastewater Also we found diverse compounds in the effluent samples such as phenolic compounds antioxidants long-chain fatty acids plasticizers cyclosiloxanes parabens and substances similar in structure to natural hormones
