Abstract

Commercial areas usually show vitality and features of a city by the characteristics such as circulation openness and diversity making commercial spaces become indispensable areas in urban area Owning to different developing conditions commercial areas have different clustering mechanisms and then form different functional structures as well as spatial configuration There are complex interrelationships between functional structures and spatial configuration Most of the studies in commercial spatial structures in Taiwan have focused on hierarchy of goods and services as well as factors impacting location However less research mentioned three dimensional spatial configuration of commercial areas via quantitative method This study aims to explore interrelationships between functional structures and spatial configuration by discussing functions building mass and void in commercial areas as well as to propose a quantitative method to assist planners in Taiwan in clarifying the ambiguity between commercial functions and corresponding spatial configuration Clarifying the above ambiguity can help understand the demand for three-dimensional space for commercial use complement the current statutory status analysis lacking consideration of the elements of the real urban environment and contribute to the planning of urban public space in Taiwan Indeed by the quantitative method the study could induce the spatial configuration in different commercial areas Futhuremore the similarity of the development background is also presented on the structure of the functional structure and the built environment
