Abstract

In order to meet the massive demands of IoT the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) proposed new cellular IoT (CIoT) technologies How to reduce the power consumption is always a critical issue because a majority of IoT devices are battery-powered 3GPP proposed eDRX and two transport optimization mechanisms to help devices reduce power consumption In this thesis based on the CP CIoT EPS Optimization a Early Release of RRC (ER-RRC) scheme is proposed with two major features entering RRC _IDLE early and reducing unnecessary paging processes The message flow is modified to make IoT devices enter RRC _IDLE early A counter-based mechanism is used to reduce unnecessary paging procedure The results show that ER-RRC outperforms standard CP CIoT EPS Optimization by gaining significant power saving with little downlink latency
