Abstract

ABSTRACT The state of practice of combining RAP into micro-surfacing usually considered RAP binder as inactive and thus the RAP was used as ‘‘black rock” This is because that the mixing process of the micro-surfacing was done in the ambient temperature that there is no high temperature can provide an energy level to mobilize the RAP binder However during the service period of the micro-surfacing the elevated pavement surface temperature and diffusion mechanism the contribution of RAP binder to the micro-surfacing makes possible Therefore the main objective of this study is to investigate the possibility of RAP binder contribution to the micro-surfacing mixture The study was carried out in two stages In the first stage four RAP contents as 20% 50% 80% and 100% and three level of RAP binder contributions were used to investigate the possible RAP binder contribution range The second stage pseudo RAP specimen that simulates RAP binder contribution without adding RAP into mixture were fabricated to compare with specimen contains RAP Performance test for the slurry surfacing as specified in the ISSA A143 and the modified Lenuther test were employed to evaluate the properties of micro-surfacing mixtures with various of RAP contents and RAP binder contribution assumptions The cross comparison between LWT WTAT am Sand Adhesion shown the results from three performance tests was clearly indicated that the RAP binder did contribute to the micro-surfacing mixture The analysis from the pseudo RAP specimen the level of RAP binder contribution is probably between 0-10% The results from the performance tests also showed that it was possible to use 100% RAP in the micro-surfacing mixture Keywords: Micro-surfacing RAP binder contribution Performance test Cold mix Asphalt Emulsion Slurry System
