Abstract

When there are public constructions of the pavements on new roads or the repairments of the existent roads there are often defects due to insufficient asphalt thickness The workarounds are often not to require the contractors to scratch off the asphalt layers and repave according to the contract but just accept with discount or have the contractor pave another layer of asphalt on it Also if the subgrade of the road isn’t compacted firmly enough it will cause the road damaged repeatedly To what extent does the insufficient asphalt thickness and the variation of the strength of the materials of the pavement influence the service life of the road? This research focuses on the estimation of the duration the cost benefit analysis and the evaluation of the function of the pavement based on the destructive patterns of fatigue crack and rut deformation This research uses the municipal roads of Taichung City as the subject of study Besides understanding the usage status of the roads we also simulate the conditions of the undamaged roads roads with insufficient asphalt thicknesses and roads with each layers impaired in various ways and analyze with mechanics specifically so that we can understand the influence due to each variable factors and the probable damage patterns and offer specific suggestions according to the results of the experiments
