Abstract

In this study the seismic performance and fire behavior of steel beam-to-column connections with web openings have been analyzed using finite element methods (FEM) First literature review and case study analyses were made to refine the design process and parameters of web openings Then the web openings of the connections in previous studies were redesigned and the seismic performance and fire behavior of the connections were simulated The results of FEM simulation shows that the redesigned web openings can effectively move the plastic hinge away from the column face and the bending moment at the column face may not decrease to 80% of the beam plastic bending moment or have similar strength at the 4%-radian drift-angle The results also indicates that high temperature may cause the connection to lose strength rapidly There is uncertainty about the fire behavior of steel beam-to-column connections with web openings and the FEM simulation needs experimental verification and detailed analyses in the coming future
