Abstract

Chang-Jung Senior High School was established by Presbyterian Church of England in 1885 named “Presbyterian Middle School” at first In the past studies about history of physical education during Japanese Colonial Period expounded the developments of institution It was rare that studied single school and verified the implementation result if it followed initial plan or not This article is based on historical materials collected by Chang-Jung Senior High School Taiwan Soutokufu Archives and old news It focuses on actual development and factors of gymnastics also sports activities such as sports day school excursions and football Basically gymnastics in Chang-Jung Senior High School followed the policy which enacted by Taiwan Governor-General's Office Because of educational trend Chang-Jung Senior High School was eager to be permitted by government and became legally academic unit In this context every academic affairs followed the provisions of private school established by Taiwan Governor-General's Office However there was a irreconcilable conflict between “being permitted by government” and “insisting Christianity” After the religious conflict in 1934 Chang-Jung Senior High School compromised to Taiwan Governor-General's Office This affected the development of sports and physical activities in campus remarkably Football is the symbolic sport in Chang-Jung Senior High School during Japanese Colonial Period This article based on historical materials collected by Chang-Jung Senior High School and memories of related people instead of game records It discussed the development of football in Chang-Jung Senior High School with student association rules and so on
