How can firms capture the value from a standards-based technological platform? By analyzing 20 telecommunications firms following 2G GSM 3G UMTS and 4G LTE standards we find that some firms might have the potential to extract the most value from the standards-based technological platform successfully but lack the sufficient resources Our study complements the discussion about capturing value in the vein of open innovation We propose that firms need to deal better with the openness of the platform That is the higher the accessibility of a platform created by a focal firm the more necessary it is for the focal firm to control bottlenecks in the platform Our study proposes a value-capture network in which many firms compete to capture value i e many firms declare their Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) through technical specifications to control the platform We also adopted a core and periphery structure to represent the characteristics of this value-capture network Based on our results we recommend that firms control the interface technologies (i e bottlenecks) in the platform to capture sufficient value from the product market
