組織簡介
本系創立於民國四十六年，五十六年起增設夜間部。八十二年起增設外國語文研究所碩士班，當時規劃以小說、戲劇、跨文化研究為發展重點。八十六學年度起大學部夜間部改制為進修推廣部（於九十三學年度起停止招生）。八十八年增設碩士在職專班，以語言學、文學及語文應用為研究方向，提供在職人士進修管道。同年增設博士班，延續碩士班既有之學術研究基礎，致力於英美語文學術研究人才之培養，九十三學年度起研究所碩士班分為甲組（文學組）及乙組（語言學組），形成完整之英文學術研究體系。除此之外，本系亦於九十二學年度起開始招收大學部、碩士班及博士班之國際學生。另已獲准將於九十八年學年度成立博士班「語言學與外語教學組」。研究人力的年輕化為本系最大特色，加上各委員會之妥善規劃與系友會之支援，本系得以快速地平衡發展。在地理位置上，本系所位於光復校區修齊大樓，揉合了古典與現代建築的特色，為文學、語言學與語言教學三者並重之教學研究重鎮。
