A measurement of the N2 number density and the N2 vibrational rotational temperature in the lower thermosphere - Instrumentation and preliminary results

摘要

The vibrational temperature (Tv) and the rotational temperature (TR) of atmospheric molecular nitrogen were measured in situ by a sounding rocket S-310-24 in the lower thermosphere, 100-160 km above Uchinoura, Kagoshima, Japan (31.1°N, 131.3°E), at 20:00 JST on February 11, 1996. Molecular nitrogen was first ionized using an electron gun (1 keV, 2 mA) and the emission of the 1st Negative Band (1NG) of the ionized N2 was measured by a sensitive spectrometer. Preliminary analysis shows that the rotational temperature nearly follows the MSIS86 atmospheric model, but shows a peak at a height of 120 km that is 100 K hotter than MSIS86.
