摘要

Geographic information is the result of describing real world phenomena at a specific time, even if the temporal information is sometimes not stored explicitly. While GIS is seen as a metaphor to the reality, information lack of temporal aspects and systems lack of ability to correctly determine the temporal status of the selected datasets may hide great risk behind the decisions being made. A typical scenario is we naively overlay map layers using GIS software without considering possible temporal discrepancy, such that we may create a virtual world that in fact never exists. As such ambiguity about time exists in almost every GIS-based application, we argue a new approach about the recording, interpretation and visualization of spatio-temporal data must be developed and assimilated into the core of GIS design. The goal of this paper is to enable the awareness of time in the GIS - based user interface, such that users have an unambiguous understanding about the temporal difference of selected datasets or features. A set of spatio-temporal data types is first proposed for describing various types of phenomena in a standardized way. We then develop algorithms to quantitatively measure the temporal difference based on the proposed data types. Finally, different working modes using specifically designed map symbols to visualize the above quantitative temporal difference are suggested. The preliminary tests indicate such innovated GIS interface provides a new perspective when compared to the traditional layer-based approach. With awareness capability, users no longer have to worry about the possible implicit discrepancy between selected datasets and can readily inspect the difference before making decisions. This is especially important to the future service-based environments, where we may access data from everywhere with no prior knowledge about their actual status.
