A performance-based design (PBD) approach for coupled wall structures (CWSs) is presented to address the issues associated with the current strength-based design procedure. The design procedure consists of three primary elements, i.e., selection of performance objectives, determination of design base shears, and implementation of plastic design. The efficiency of the proposed PBD method is evaluated using four example structures. The results indicate that the proposed method is able to generate a CWS showing predictable seismic behavior under multiple seismic hazard levels. This design method also efficiently improves the global yielding mechanism of CWSs compared to the current design guidelines.
