N2 - Upon the beginning of the 21st century, the market of housing in Japan is increasingly entering into the stock situation. Therefore, it becomes a very important topic as to how to effectively cope with the existing housing in Japan. The object of this study is to look at Kodan Housing, covering a period of 19 years from 1984, when the first edition of standard detail drawings were published by HUD (the Housing and Urban Development Corporation), which was changed into the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) in 1999, to the year of 2002, when the latest edition (the 5th ed) came into existence. The content of this study is focused on the change in the construction method of roofing, exterior walls, and balconies, which are all vulnerable to environmental conditions, such as rain and sunshine. In this study, the factors, which have affected the changes in the construction method were found out and analyzed, as well. The results of this study will be useful references for the sustainable use of existing housing.
