A study on Indoor air quality and its determinants in Taiwan child care centers

This study aims to investigate indoor air quality (IAQ) in child care centers (CCCs) and evaluate their determinants involving representative samples in Taiwan. Measurements were performed for air temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, ventilation rates, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, fine particle mass, formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds while IAQ-related information were collected. Determinants of indoor pollutant concentrations were evaluated with regression analyses based on mass balance principles. It was found that outdoor concentration, occupant density and AERs were found to be determinants in the indoor CO2 models. In the indoor CO models, proximity to kitchens and AERs were found to be the determinant.Outdoor PM10 concentration and presence of curtains were found to be the determinants in the indoor PM10 model. In the indoor TVOC models, only floor cleaning was found to be the determinant. Outdoor HCHO concentration and presence of curtains were found to be the determinants of indoor HCHO. We conclude that our findings identify the important influence of indoor sources and maintenance activities on IAQ in Taiwan CCCs.
