Analysis of tumbling motions based on limited telemetry data and radio signals

PHOENIX is a 2U Cubesat that is developed by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) as a part of the QB50 project. In the early orbit phase (EOP), PHOENIX was subject to a significant tumbling behavior to the extent that the rate sensor is saturated. Attitude determination and control system (ADCS) of PHOENIX plays an essential role to stabilize the spacecraft in EOP and in the presence of anomalies. This paper addresses analyses of limited telemetry data and radio signal strength to verify the feasibility in recovering the PHOENIX from tumbling. As the rate gyro was found to be saturated, the effort in the determination of the rotation axis and rotation rate is augmented by the magnetometer data. Radio signal waveform is useful for rate estimation and time-frequency analysis. It is believed that the analysis approach will be applicable to many low-cost CubeSat missions.
