In retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) diseases, despite near total loss of photoreceptors, the remaining retinal neurons remain intact. A study was carried out to determine a way to jumpstart these remaining awaiting neurons and thus create the sensation of vision. Tests in 15 blind volunteers showed that the remaining neurons can be activated by an electrical signal, resulting in the perception of light.
