Assessment of simultaneous GNSS radio occupation data for ionosphere probing

Radio occultation (RO) is a powerful technique that can provide vertical profiles of refractivity, temperature, pressure, and water vapor in the neutral atmosphere and electron density in the ionosphere. Abel inversion methods have been widely utilized to retrieve electron density profiles (EDPs) from RO measurements. It is well known that Abel inversion is subject to errors due to the spherical symmetry assumption. In the paper, we propose an improved Abel inversion technique which considers pairs of ROs approximately occurring at the same time and place. The EDP is retrieved along with horizontal gradients in both GPS-LEO satellite links by the generalized Tikhonov regularization method. Simulations were conducted to evaluate the proposed method.
