摘要

The diminution of the drag reduction effect and the degradation of an aqueous solution of poly(ethylene oxide) were determined by pumping the solution through a 4. 02 mm I. D. stainless steel tube and monitoring the change of its friction factor. It was found that the polymer lost its drag reduction effect rather quickly. The friction factor reached a steady-state value after circulating for about 20 minutes. Degradation experiments were also carried out by stirring. The diminution in intrinsic viscosities indicated a reduction of molecular weight of this polymer to 70% of its original value. Thermal degradation of this polymer was not observed in a pool boiling apparatus.
