N2 - This paper proposes an improved social spider algorithm to enable the particles of the original algorithm to move intelligently in the evolving process for almost all benchmark functions. In order to enhance the convergence rate and searching capability of the original social spider algorithm, the tent map control is adopted for the neighbor search of male spiders and the mating operator is presented to obtain better search capability and convergence rate. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper can uplift the algorithm performance and avoid falling into locally optimal solution in comparison with other algorithms. Finally, the improved algorithm has been applied to a nonlinear system to design a best fuzzy PID controller.
