Determination of Azimuthal Anchoring Energies between the Rectangular-groove Surface and Nematic Liquid Crystal Layer by Using a Geometric Model

In this paper, a simple but accurate method is proposed to determine the azimuthal anchoring energies between the rectangular-groove surface and nematic liquid crystal layer by using a geometric model. The azimuthal anchoring energies of the liquid crystals can be directly determined from the measured size of the groove depth and the pitch of the grooves. In this method, the parameter of the model is determined first by using a set of the experimental data. And then the azimuthal anchoring energies at different groove depths can be evaluated. There is quite good agreement in magnitude of the azimuthal anchoring energies between the experimental data and our theoretical results. It can be found that the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) tends to have a greater azimuthal anchoring energy when the groove depth is greater or the pitch of the grooves is shorter.
