Evaluating the exploitative quantity of groundwater in the upstream and midstream of Dajia river Basin

This study is from the results of 2011 projects of groundwater resources investigation in the mountainous region of Taiwan. The investigation and survey results from the projects are collected and combined to develop a three-dimensional numerical model by using a groundwater modeling software, MODFLOW. The sustainable concept of ground water resources is considered to evaluate the groundwater safe yield and exploitable quantity in the Dajia River Basin. The safe yield in this study is identified as the excess groundwater flows out from the study area and does not affect the original groundwater system. The results show that the safe yield in the mountainous region of Dajia River Basin is about 173.1 × 106 ton/year. Then, considering the cases by adding and subtracting by 50% of mean precipitation, the result of groundwater safe yield is 172.6~174.3 × 106 ton/year. The quantity does not show obvious discrepancy. The exploitable quantity of ground water is identified as the pumping quantity under the specific value of groundwater drawdown in the exploitive potential zone. The result shows that the exploitable quantity of groundwater is about 493 × 106 ton/year in the exploitive potential zone under allowing two meters drawdown. The exploitable quantity of groundwater under a unit area is 7.3 × 106 ton/year/km2. The results obtained in this study can be used in the groundwater resources exploitation and management in the mountainous region of Dajia River Basin.
