Evaluation of the stress wave techniques on the prestressed concrete piles

This paper investigates the ability of the sonic echo (SE), impulse response (IR), and parallel seismic (PS) tests by using a field constructed prototype PC piles. The experimental results indicate that three approaches can successfully detect the approximate pile lengths, but the SE method provides the better ability on the defect detection comparing with two other methods. Furthermore, the pile length evaluated from the PS method is shown to increase with the increasing borehole but can be reduced after considering the length correction of the PS test, and then provide more conservative estimations on the pile length. Results of two correction approaches of the PS test also show that they can reduce the error of estimated pile length.
