The vibration and damping analyses of orthotropic cylindrical shells with a constrained damping layer are discussed in the present paper. The finite element based on a discrete layer theory is employed to derive the equations of motion for the composite system. The one- and three-layered elements in the thickness direction are combined to analyze cylindrical shells with a partially constrained damping layer. The effects of various parameters, such as material properties, thicknesses of constraining and damping layers, treatment areas and locations are discussed. Numerical results are shown that the partial treatment or the thinner damping layer can be chosen to save the constrained damping layer materials under the consideration of damping.
