Formation and morphology of superconducting Hg-1223 thick film on Ni substrate

The influence of processing conditions on the formation and growth morphology of Hg-1223 superconductor on non-oriented Ni substrates has been studied. The growth morphology strongly depends on preparation conditions. Four different Hg-1223 surface morphologies were identified. The tapes with the highest Jc had terraced flow-growth surfaces with no facets. The tapes with lower Jcs usually had flat Hg-1223 plates with square facets. The Hg-1223 plates had their c-axis in the tape plane and random Hg-1223 plates stacked together at various angles. By adjusting the precursor and controlling the P(Hg), the P(O2), and the sintering temperature, the preferred terraced flow-growth surface can be achieved.
