title = "Formation mechanism of copper-silver metal nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon shell",
abstract = "Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is a very useful method in studies of electron density distributions of nanoparticles. The formation mechanism of nanosize copper-silver encapsulated in the inert carbon shell (Cu/Ag@C) has been studied by in-situ synchrotron SAXS spectroscopy. The SAXS spectra have been determined during the temperature-dependent formation of the nanosize Cu/Ag@C. A detailed structural changes corresponding to the growth of the Cu/Ag nanoparticles as the Ag+- and Cu2+- β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complexes are carbonized at the temperature range of 363-513 K. By controlling the molar ratios of OH on β-CD to metal, the desired size (i.e., ranged from 7 to 40 nm) can be synthesized. A rapid growth of the Cu/Ag nanoparticles occurs at 393-423 K. The diameter of the complete growth of the Cu/Ag@C nanoparticles is in the range of 20-26 nm with the carbon shell thicknesses of 3-5 nm.",
