He was the Chapter Chair of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Taipei Chapter (1996–1998), the Program Chair of the 1998 International Conference on Mechatronic Technology (ICMT’98), the General Vice Chair of the Eighth International Fuzzy Systems Association World Congress, 1999 (IFSA’99), and the Organizing Committee Chair of the 2002 Asia-Pacific Conference on Industrial Engineering and Management Systems. He was the Publication Chair of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, the Program Chair of the 2003 International Conference on Automation Technology, the Program Co-Chair of the 2004 IEEE International Conference on Networks, Communication, and Control, the Program Chair of the 2005 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics, the Organizing Committee Chair of the 2005 Taiwan–Japan Bilateral Workshop on Automation Technology, and the Program Co-Chair of the 2006 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics. He is the Program Chair of the IEEE 33rd Annual Conference on Industrial Electronics (IEEE IECON 2007) and the General Co-Chair of the 2007 International Conference on Automation Technology (Automation 2007). He is the recipient of the Ford University Research Award (1996–1998). He has received three Distinguished Research Awards (1996–2002) and two Research Fellow Awards (2002–2008) from the National Science Council, Taiwan. He was named in Who’s Who in the World in 2001 and 2002, and Who’s Who in the R.O.C. in 2002. Funding Information: Prof. Cheng received the Senior Scientist Award from the Department of Defense, R.O.C., in 1994. He won the Kayamori Best Automation Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (IEEE ICRA) 1999. He also received the Outstanding Industry-University Cooperation (IUC) Award from the Ministry of Education (MoE), R.O.C., in 2003, the NCKU Distinguished IUC-Professor Award in 2004, the National Science Council (NSC) Outstanding IUC Award (as the only awardee) in 2006, and the NSC Outstanding Research Award in 2006. During 2003–2004, he was the Chair of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Taipei Chapter. He also served as ICRA 2006 Kayamori Best Automation Paper Award Committee Chair, the Technical Program Chair, the Program Co-Chair, and the Finance Chair for several IEEE conferences, and for many IEEE and other conference program committees as well as several major government technical committees. Since December 2006, he has been the Convener and the Program Director of the NSC Automation Engineering Program, Taiwan.
