Implementation and performance of a low-power multirate PSK receiver robust to Doppler shift

An almost all-digital and low-power PSK receiver has been designed for deep-space and satellite applications. The receiver employs the double differential detection to increase the receiver's robustness to Doppler shift and the subsampling technique with 1-bit A/D converter at the front to reduce the complexity and power consumption. The baseband can be swichted to one stage differential detection at low Doppler rates to obtain an optimum performance. Furthermore, the baseband can be employed with direct subsampling or IF sampling front-end. The receiver also incorporates digital decimation stages to accommodate variable bit rates and therefore it is highly programmable. Issues of non-idealities in a real application are also addressed. The receiver is designed and operated at UHF frequency (435 MHz) to support over a wide range of data rates from 0.1 Kbps to 100 Kbps.
