Recently, a seminar regarding automation strategy and direction was held in the National Cheng Kung University partially sponsored by the Engineering Center under the National Science Council (NSC). This two-days series seminar attracted engineers, professors, students, and businessmen around the island to participate. The speakers were from industry (the machine tools and shipbuilding industry), from government (a group leader in the industry automation implementation team of Executive Yuan), and from university (who has much experience in CIM education). Through this seminar, many people realized the strategic role of AMT. Many engineers and managers had a face-to-face opportunity to state their difficulties in the implementation phase to the speakers. After the seminar, a plant tour was also arranged so that the attendance might emulate other industries' environments to their own plant.

N2 - The close relationship among the Government, industries and universities is one of the major reasons for the economic success in Taiwan. This paper presents the co-operation procedure of how advanced manufacturing technology is being implemented to provide the industry with competitive advantage. Several case studies are also provided to illustrate the details of the procedure. For most of the people outside Taiwan, an understanding of the current status in Taiwan is certainly a basis for future international co-operation. The objective of this paper is to provide this basis through the introduction of the authors' understanding and experience.
