Coastal Ocean Monitoring Center has conducted field experiments to detect the internal wave at Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines by using Taiwan Ocean Research Vessel No. 3 (OR3), which is refitted with a X-band marine radar. The radar works as a 3D internal wave observation device in addition to its original navigation function. The radar observes the propagation of internal wave by applying high-speed data acquisition and image processing technologies. The experiments reveal that only one internal wave is observed when it is far from the vessel, because the second internal wave is shadowed by the Earth's curvature. The findings of the experiments are also verified by collecting Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite images and in-situ water temperature data.
