Measurement of the Nernst effect in the normal state of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8+δ

We have successfully measured the Nernst effect for the first time in the normal state of a cuprate superconductor, Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8+δ, ver the temperature range from Tc to above room temperature. The signal is small: the Nersnt coefficient, Q, is never larger than 3 nV/K-T over the entire temperature range. The negative sign of Q suggests that the hole scattering rate, 1/τ, in Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8+δ is an increasing function of energy.
