摘要

A mechanism consists of mechanical members and joints in a prescribed way. A machine comprises one or more mechanisms, a power input, and an adequate control system, with an effective work output. This chapter presents the basic definitions of mechanisms and machines, characteristics of mechanical members and joints, representations of joints for mechanisms in ancient books, definitions of (generalized) kinematic chains, and the concept of constrained motion, for the presentations in the follow-up chapters.
