N2 - The morphologies and characteristics of martensite in 304L stainless steel produced at strain rates ranging from 8×102 to 5×103 s-1 are investigated using a compressive spit-Hopkinson bar system. The relationship of the results with the mechanical behavior of the product is analyzed. The steel has the following chemical composition: 17.91% Cr, 9.21% Ni, 1.47 Mn, 0.41% Si, 0.23% Mo, 0.09% V, 0.021% P, 0.024% S, 0.034% C and the balance Fe.
