Natural convection in a horizontal annulus partially filled with cold water

A combined numerical and experimental study is reported of natural convection inside a horizontal concentric cylindrical annulus partially filled with cold water encompassing the density inversion. A holographic interferometry system is employed to map the temperature distribution in the water layer, and a laser shadowgraph system is used to measure the local heat transfer coefficient on the water-wetted inner cylinder of the annulus. Numerical simulations have also been conducted for the steady, laminar natural convection of air/water layers enclosed in the annulus. Both the numerical and the experimental results obtained in the present study unveil an interesting coupling between the natural convection of the air layer and that of the cold water bulk in the presence of the density inversion effect. The predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data.
