The purpose of this preliminary study is to identify empirical clusters of schizophrenia based on neurocognitve indicators using cluster analysis. Seventy-six individuals with schizophrenia who participated in the work rehabilitation program of a psychiatric rehabilitation hospital in Taiwan were administered the Brief Neuropsychological Cognitive Examination, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, and the Comprehensive Occupational Therapy Evaluation. Three distinct clusters similar to the western literature were found including one near normal functioning group, a group showing deteriorated conceptual thinking, and an anomia and executive function impaired group. Neurocognitive functioning was found to be related to clinical symptoms, but not with work performance. Future research with a larger sample and a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological assessment is warranted.
