We have synthesized and characterized a new soluble poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative containing 2,5-diphenyl-1,4-phenylene and 2,5-didodecyloxy-1,4-phenylene moieties. The polymer has good solubility and high thermal stability and shows high photoluminescence efficiency in the thin-film state (0.36). From an electrochemical study, the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels of poly(2,5-diphenyl-1,4-phenylene-1.2-ethenylene-2,5-didodecyloxy-1,4-phenylene-1, 2-ethenylene) (TP-PPV) have been estimated to be -5.16 and -2.89 eV, respectively. The threshold voltage and luminance of a single-layer indium tin oxide/TP-PPV/aluminum device are 5 V and 104 cd/m2, respectively. Electroluminescence measurements reveal that TP-PPV emits bright yellow light. The luminance of a light-emitting diode made from TP-PPV is about three times higher than that of one made from poly [2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy )-1,4-phenylenevinylene].
