Three-dimensional natural convection between horizontal, highly eccentric cylinders, which simulates the heat dissipation process occurring within the power cable conduit buried underground, is numerically studied. The ‘zonal grid’ approach is used to provide the outlet boundary conditions required for the computation. It is found that the highest temperature in each transverse section occurs at the bottom of the cable, where the power cable contacts the concrete conduit. This contacting point will be deteriorated earliest due to its restricted space for heat dissipation through natural convection. It is also found that the surface temperatures of the cable are increased toward the outlet plane.
