N2 - The review focused on the development of utilizing photodynamic therapy (PDT) in skin diseases in Taiwan is presented. PDT uses a sensitizer, light and molecular oxygen to selectively kill cells. The use of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) as photosensitizing prodrug to treat patients with basal cell carcinoma, Bowen's disease and actinic keratosis was begun in 1998. PDT could also improve wound healing in patients with chronic infected wounds.
