A method of pole assignment is presented for power system stabilizer design to improve the dynamic stability in power systems. The purpose of the method is to minimize the feedback gain of the power system stabilizer resulting from linear optimal control theory. This method is essentially a pole assignment method together with the linear optimal control theory and numerical optimization technique. The power system stabilizer which is designed by the proposed method results in an approximate system response characteristic and the same closed-loop poles as designed by linear optimal control theory. Theoretical formulations for the proposed method are discussed. The solution algorithm is organized. A numerical example is tested to support the proposed method.
