To improve the properties of zirconia-toughened-alumina(ZTA) ceramics, a technique which involves hydrolysis of Zr(OC3H7)4 in an Al2O3 slurry to form an Al2O3 powder with uniformly distributed ZrO2 is described. The addition of TiO2 within its solubility limit in ZTA enhanced the sinterability of the ZTA powder. A relative density of 98% for ZTA bodies can be obtained by firing at 1500°C for 2hr. It is shown that the presence of TiO2 promotes the grain growth of Al2O3 and ZrO2, and contributes to the retention of tetragonal-ZrO2 in the sintered ZTA body.
