This study is aimed to evaluate the capability of the domestic prototype of diagnostic ultrasound scanner developed by Institute of Industry Technology (ITRI) and compared its performance with 6 commercial ultrasound scanners to assess its marketing competition and to provide a basis for further improvement. The evaluation procedures were divided to two parts. Firstly, objective phantom tests included the performance of depth of penetration distance accuracy, axial and lateral resolution, cyst image, and contrast resolution. Secondly, subjective image assessment of human abdominal organs based on the following parameters: overall image quality resolution, range of gray levels, noise and artifact, and graininess. The results show that quality assurance tests and image quality of the prototype ultrasound are comparable to the commercial low-end ultrasound scanners. Some of its image properties, range of gray levels and noise and artifacts, can even reach the level of middle-end scanners. The prototype performs better images for scanning the pancreas than for the liver and kidneys. We also proceed to develop more accurate and objective methods to quantify quality assurance tests for future ultrasound quality assessments.
