A real-time method to calculate the optimal reactive power compensation and determine the firing angle of a static VAR compensator (SVC) in a power system is presented. The optimization problem is written in terms of the minimization of power line loss by minimizing the line currents. After installing optimal reactive power compensation, the line currents become three-phase balanced and minimized under all conditions, and the compensated power factor becomes unity. The formulations for firing-angle control of several types of SVC are derived. Theoretical derivations and the computation procedures are formulated by including a digital technique for real-time data acquisition. A numerical example of real-time simulation is discussed to show the performance of the proposed method.
