Reducing vortex shedding for bluff bodies by cylinder controllers

摘要

Both water table and wind tunnel experiments are conducted to study the phenomena of reducing vortex shedding for bluff bodies by cylinder controllers. The bluff body examined is a circular cylinder of diameter 2 cm. The control cylinder is also a circular type of diameter 0.2 cm. The gap ratios are 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1 respectively. The Reynolds numbers are about 250 and 2642 for the water table tests and wind tunnel runs respectively. It is observed that the control cylinder with 0.075 gap ratio can reduce both the form drag and the vortex shedding frequency of the main cylinder. The installation of the control cylinder on one side of the main cylinder can influence the vortex shedding processes on both sides. Namely, the shedding processes of them are strongly dependent. On the other hand, the control cylinder has only local effect on surface pressure distributions of the main cylinder.
