N2 - Salt is a typical condiment and an essential nutrient for the human body. Salt and salty related utterances, e.g., kè-kiâm-chúi 過鹹水 'pass-salty-water = go abroad', also play a role in language. This study collects expressions that employ salt and salty from Taiwanese corpora and dictionaries. Research questions ask: (1) What cultural attributes does salty express?; (2) What social communication scripts does salty constitute in the metaphorical domain?; and, (3) What language type does Taiwanese belong to? Script category (Nguyen and Murphy 2003) and the typology of verb-framed vs. satellite-framed languages (Talmy 2000) are adopted as the theoretical background. The results show social communicative functions of salt / salty and that Taiwanese is a verb-framed language.
