摘要

Slightly hypoeutectic and eutectic compacted graphite (CG) cast irons were compared with gray irons and ductile irons with the same base chemical analysis, by performing several holding experiments. It was found that the CG iron will exhibit a cooling curve with a temperature of eutectic undercooling (TEU) lower than both the corresponding curves for gray and ductile iron. This lower TEU in CG iron is considered to be responsible for the higher chilling tendency of this iron. It was also demonstrated that the eutectic cell structure and the number of eutectic cells in CG iron is very close to the one for gray iron. It was concluded that while the nucleation conditions in CG iron are close to those in gray iron, the growth conditions are similar to those in ductile iron. (Edited author abstract. )
