This paper describes an implementation of an expert system for automated structural synthesis. The expert system is configured to examine the feasibility of an online consultant and monitoring program for computer-aided optimum synthesis of structural and mechanical systems. The focus is on the development of a knowledge base to provide interactive assistance in finite element modeling for analysis and design. This encompasses concepts of mesh generation, selection of elements for user specified loads and expected deformation fields, and the specification of boundary conditions.
