An effective method which incorporates with a unified approach for stabilizing subsynchronous torsional oscillations in a large turbine generator system containing series-capacitor compensation is presented in this paper. The proposed scheme utilizers a set of thyristor-controlled static phase shifters to modulate the active power transmission by injecting a quadrature phase voltage between the generator and the step-up transformer in the IEEE Second Benchmark Model, system-1. A control strategy based on modal control theory is developed to design a set of damping controllers in order to shift the unstable torsional modes to the desired locations on the complex plane. An eigenvalue technique is employed to validate the designed controller under different loading conditions. Time-domain simulations have also been performed to examine the effectiveness of the proposed scheme under a severe three-phase short-circuit fault. The simulation results show that the static phase shifters incorporated with the designed controller can effectively suppress subsynchronous resonance in the studied system.
