Switching of unbalanced loads on transient performance of a grid-connected induction generator

This paper presents the analyzed results of switching unbalanced loads on transient characteristics of a three-phase grid-connected induction generator (GCIG). A three-phase induction-machine model is employed to derive the complete dynamic equations of the studied GCIG feeding a three-phase load connected between the GCIG and the grid. Transient results of the studied GCIG subject to a sudden switching of a three-phase load, a two-phase load, and a single-phase load are respectively investigated and compared. Experimental results obtained from a laboratory 2.2 kW cage-rotor induction machine driven by a brushless DC motor are also performed. It can be concluded from the experimental and simulated results in this paper that sudden switching of an unbalanced load between the studied GCIG and the grid can result in distorted harmonics on the phase current of the studied GCIG.
