Synthesis and Characterization of Sn Coating on MWCNT Using DBA as a Capping Agent

The good conductivity and low melting temperature of Sn is beneficial for interconnect applications. This study was an attempt to optimize the Sn coating process on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (Sn/MWCNT). Sn/MWCNT was synthesized from SnCl2 solution using 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DBA) as the capping agent with varying mass ratios. MWCNTs were dispersed in a DBA solution incorporating 83% polyphosphoric acid and phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) while being purged with N2. The DBA-MWCNT suspension was then added into the SnCl2 solution, followed by titration with a NaBH4 solution to produce a uniform Sn coating. The Sn/MWCNTs were analyzed using scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of DBA addition on Sn coating performance was investigated. The Sn-coated MWCNTs exhibited enhancement in resistance to thermal decomposition, as indicated by an increasing decomposition temperature compared to that of pristine MWCNTs.
