Tetrahedral grid generation by a segmented advancing front method

A simple and effective method to generate tetrahedral mesh about complex geometry is developed. The method divides the flow domain into segments bounded by cross-sectional planes along a suitable body axis or flow direction. A two-dimensional unstructured grid generator is used to generate triangular grids on the cross-sectional planes. In a fashion similar to the advancing front method, tetrahedral meshes are generated between consecutive cross-sectional planes by connecting the grid points already on the planes. The final tetrahedral mesh is obtained by stacking together segments of tetrahedral meshes. Since only a two-dimensional grid generator is used, the method proposed is simple to implement and effective to use. A complex fuselage-wing-stores configuration is used to demonstrate the capability of the method.
